Dear friends in sailing,
What a day! Great wind and an outstanding course made for a fun filled
afternoon of sailing for those of us who managed to stay dry. Thank you,
Janet and Mark. Special thanks also to Doug Kell for having the committee
boat ready. A well run race always starts with good committee boat
preparation. Just a reminder to all subsequent committees to continue
doing a good job of leaving the boat in as good a shape as when we pick it
up.
Highlights of the race include:
- Warren A. putting on a show for the beach club by capsizing by the
swimming area while struggling to get to the starting line in time.
- Outstanding start in the displacement hull class by Cliff and crew,
and Polly and Bill, sailing well enough overall to keep the faster boats
well at bay until the 4th leg.
- Newcomer Harry Peddie with another outstanding first leg, only to take
the scenic tour by Joe T. and Cliff E. 's camps, to recruit new sailors, I
suppose.
- Great overall race by defending planing hull champ Doug Craib and Barry
(its about time everything worked) Cohen running neck and neck the entire
race to finish within a minute of each other.
- Ivan using a gust as a excuse to cool off at the finish and Cliff’s crew
using Ivan’s capsize to do the same. It’s good to see the buddy system is
alive and well at LIMYRU when needed.
- Almost "cat"astrophic capsize recovery by Mike Meager to still finish
ahead of two other cats.
- Great overall cat race to finish first in class by Doug and Lisa. A lot
easier getting out this race than the practice race two weeks ago, right Doug?
Announcements:
1. Port tackers, myself included, keep an eye out for starboard boats,
especially at the start.
2. Race starts will continue as with this week with the following flags:
- Yellow-warning horn
- 5 min. then white flag to start displacement hulls
- 5 min. then blue flag starts planing hulls
- 5 min. then red starts multi hulls.
See you on the water,
Mike
Tip of the week: At the start while it isn’t worth cramming
into a messy crowd of boats to get to the very end of a favored line,
you should never go too far from the corner, though it’s most important
to hit the line going full speed. |
