August 1, 1999 Dear Friends in Sailing, The forecast for Sunday’s race number 5 looked ideal. Winds at 10 to 15 mph and a front moving through promised an interesting outlook to the race. When the red flag went up for the start of the mono hulls, dead calm kept most of the boats near the starting line for the full 5 minutes as the multi hull start ensued. In essence, all boats started together with the cats at a 5 minute advantage. The early advantage given by the conditions was soon taken away by the light winds and long course that followed. The top multi hull position was filled by Mike Meagher again, showing that he can sail in light as well heavy conditions. It’s beginning to look as though we could make the crew of the Meagher Cat committee all of the races; they could start the race, jump in their boat, and finish before everyone else to record times. Mark Eggleton and Robert Fraser did the tack to stay in the wind routine to perfection to finish close behind. Doug Merrill, sailing without his favorite tactician, Lisa, was in the unusual position of playing catch up the entire race. I guess we know who the real sailor in the family is. Ivan Bush sailed superbly for the 4th race in a row and captured first mono hull. The Doug Craib boat had a great start and was the first boat to the 2nd mark. Unfortunately the marks go 1,2,3,4 and not 2,1,3,4. Joe Taylor was one of the fastest boats to the first two marks again, until Emily made him stop for a snack at his place during the third leg. Speaking of family obligations, Doug Jr. started his race from the family dock while saying his goodbyes and still finished a respectable 4th mono hull. Joe Guaraldo did a textbook "dip start" and was the first over the line. Take notes everyone. It was a great light wind strategy. Thanks to Doug Kell Jr. we are now going "online". It looks like the LIMYRU sailors’ "wave" of the future until the Y2K bug bites us. Please read the comments from Doug below. If there is anyone without internet access please call me at 843-0622. See you next week, Mike
LIMYRU has a web page! Or at least a start on one. You can find it at "www.kelcomaine.com/limyru". Please check it out. I would appreciate your comments and ideas about what to include in this web site. I have put the text from the LIMYRU brochure on one page, and the registration form on another. These need to be proofread for typos and for content. I've also included a link to a page for "race results" and links for a few other topics. Mike will be e-mailing the newsletter to me and I will put that on a page starting after Race 6. Anyone that wants to contact me can do so by e-mail at (see "Contact Us" page) or by phone at 800-343-4057. Dugald Kell, Jr.
Tip of the week. In heavy winds, get your boat planing as early as you can by: turning 15 to 30 degrees farther down wind than a beam reach (if the heading is still in the general direction as your intended course); raising the center board as high as conditions permit, at least half way; get the boat as flat as you can; trim the sails in and move back slightly to get the boat on top of the water. | |
