August 21, 2005 - Race 7 and 8(not) Newsletter Race 7 Never in the history of LIMYRU has so cruel a trick been played on two unsuspecting veteran sailors. Because the cats start 5 minutes behind the planing hulls, they were cursed with a complete wind collapse and were unable to catch the rest of the fleet. Sorry guys, someone owes you one. A head start next week? Don't blame the race committee of Doug and Carlene Craib. They gave up a dinner engagement just to watch you "drift" by at the finish. With no displacement hulls in the race, the planing hull fleet was well represented and competitive indeed. Ivan Bush and son treated us to a well-sailed race and a solid 4th place finish. He "harassed" the rest of the planing hulls the entire race. The Lightning crew of Tom, Dick and John turned in the best crewmanship of the day turning an eight hundred pound Lightning into "light wind water bug" and finishing ahead of two cats and Warren A.'s Laser by seconds. Great race for "big red" as Warren was able to hold the lead for much of the race until the last leg. Chuck M. and Mark E. avoided the Fraser/Meagher "cat-tastrophy" by sneaking into the planing hull fleet with expert tactics and riding their wakes across the lines to first and second place actual. The Peddie Albacore and my JY had a great duel the entire race until the end that is, when, as usual, I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and watched as Harry and Josh maneuvered into first place. Great job. Race 8 If you blinked, you missed it. Under the threat of a rain and thunderstorm forecast, race 8 has been postponed to next week. Starting time for #8 is 2 P.M. with #9 to follow after a short intermission. Be ready for a shorter course in the middle of the lake below the islands for #8. Two complete laps on a shortened course are in order, conditions permitting. The #9 course is a surprise. Doug Kell, Sr. isn't talking but is sporting a "devious" grin. Will we have to start with capsized boats and right them at the gun? Anything is possible. Better practice your righting maneuvers this week. Maybe I've said too much. See you on the water, Mike C. | |
