Race 6

The wind conditions for race 6 can only be described as outstanding. With an infinitely fair course set up by the committee boat crew of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gauraldo, boat performance was more the result of good helmsmanship than luck in dealing with the usual fickle winds of Lucerne.

The displacement class of "ice cream social host" Doug Kell in his "comfy boat" and new comer Tim Wakeland in a beautiful little Butterfly, sailed very well, indeed, and stayed close to the rest of the fleet. If Tim's name seems familiar to you running enthusiasts, he is a very successful marathon runner, so don't plan on Tim tiring out on those heavy wind races.

Great to see old friend Warren Adair joining us in his slightly "porous" Laser. Thanks to the hospitality of Liliane and Doug Kell, Warren was rescued and resuscitated after the race with a good helping of chocolate crunch ice cream.

The multi hulls were championed by Mike Meagher who played the shoreline to perfection to best the rest of the fleet of Bob Fraser, Chuck McClead and Anthony Anderson. Anthony, though an infrequent racer, did an outstanding job in managing his Hobie in puffy conditions.

Yours truly finished a not too distant third behind Ian Cohen and Harry Peddie after leading Ian and battling Harry for the entire race. In a timing dead heat, Ian was declared the winner by the race committee with a slight visual lead at the finish.

A non-race highlight of the afternoon was the ice cream social hosted by the Kells which included a visit from much missed on the course, Bill and Polly Baron. We hope to see the big blue Day Sailor on the water next year.

The forecast looks good for race 7 and the return of many of our top sailors whose busy family schedules forced their absence this past week.

See you on the water,

Mike C.
